The Mighty Mississippi

The Nauvoo Temple

As I sat in church today, pondering the study of Joseph Smith we are going to be doing in Relief Society and priesthood, I remembered this picture I took of the Mississippi River, 2 years ago when we went to Nauvoo to see the pagant. I just finished reading a novel of a woman in the 1800's that found a "Book of Mormon" in England, and her quest to find the people who are a part of this new religion. When she finally found someone, it was on the banks of this mighty Mississippi. It was on a spot like this one, that her dream of finding religion she knew to be true was realized.

It's hard to explain the beauty and majesty of this river without seeing it in person for yourself. No picture could do it proper justice. When you look at my picture you see lots of green behind the lavendar. The green is all lilly pads floating on the river. The River itself was as wide as to the hills in the distance. What a gift to be given to the early saints who had suffered so much, and had been moved on from so many places. Although Nauvoo was a swamp when they arrived, it soon grew into a beautiful city, with the most gorgeous view across the river, just down from the temple. It's also amazing to me to think that this huge river actually froze over, just as the saints were being driven from Nauvoo, which gave them the opportunity to walk across the vast and mighty river. This beautiful river, placed in the middle of the promised land gave God's children a means of transportation through river boats, it gave life to the land around it, and when the saints needed an escape, it turned to solid ground to assist great numbers of people to cross it. If you ever have the opportunity to gaze out at the Mississippi River, take advantage of it, and give yourself time to really enjoy.

That's my Calvin!!

New Years eve we made home made pizza, played games and watched movies. We always let the kids stay up until midnight New Years Eve. This year there was a breakfast at the church at 12:15 am for the youth. Mostly for the kids leaving the dance, but they invited the deacons and beehive also. Allen & I didn't want to stay up that late, and asked Brady if he would drive Darian over to the church. (Calvin didn't want to go) Soooo Allen, Zach & I went to sleep, and trusted the boys to take care of themselves. The next morning around 8:00 I went downstairs to watch the parade with Zach & Ethan. Calvin was playing a game on the computer. After a little while I looked over and saw Calvin's head cocked off to the side. He had actually fallen asleep at the computer!!!! After I took the picture, I sent him up to bed. He stayed there until 6:00 pm!!! It turns out he had stayed up all night long. Apparently there is a kid at his school that told him that he had stayed awake for 10 days straight, and Calvin thought that sounded like Fun.

Ethan's new scooter

Ethan loves to ride his scooter, but the older one (first picture) used to belong to Darian, and the handle wouldn't stay all the way up. He looked pretty goofy leaning down so far to ride, and he really wanted a new one for Christmas. Well he got his wish. The new scooter has bigger wheels, and is very well made. He'll go out to just ride around the neighborhood from early in the morning, until late at night. All hours of the day we will hear the garage door opening and closing as he's going out again. His best friend Parker (in the picture) got the exact same scooter that Ethan got. They had such fun together.

I love fall!!!

October, 2007.... After an all too long, too hot summer, it is so wonderful when Fall comes and you can finally spend time outdoors again. (without having to be in the pool) After school one day Zach and Ethan volunteered to help rake the leaves. I've been a mom for 18 1/2 years, and I'm still learning that kids are so much more capable than I give them credit for. They both worked so hard, and had fun doing it. I don't know if my other boys ever had the opportunity to rake leaves and play in them. They did however get lots of experience with shovelling decorative rock and planting when they helped us landscape the pool area, and then the back yard retaining wall.

Try to turn 40 gracefully

September 8, 2007. I went to St. George with Penny for MAT School training with Reliv. We had a great weekend, and she drove me home with much care to get me back by 6:00pm because Allen said he had tickets for something for me, and I better be back on time. So when Penny dropped me off, she helped me with my bags. I told her I could take care of it, but she insisted. I couldn't figure out why she was following me all the way into the back of my house, when I heard the "Surprise"... A bunch of friends were there to celebrate the LAST thing in the world I wanted to even remember.... My 40th Birthday!!!
